CDC Data Show 80 Percent Increase In HIV Among Young African American Men Who Have Sex With Men

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

Yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finally released data it had long held internally that demonstrate an alarming increase in the number of HIV/AIDS cases among African American young men who have sex with men (YMSM).

The report, CDC HIV/AIDS Update: New Surveillance Slide Set on Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM), shows that in the 33 states that collected data, the number of HIV/AIDS cases increased among adult and adolescent men who have sex with men (MSM) in all age groups from 2001 through 2005. The largest proportional increase , however, occurred among MSM ages 13-24, with African American/black YMSM in this age category suffering the largest increase -- up from 928 cases in 2001 to 1,618 cases in 2005.

"This dramatic increase in HIV rates is yet another in a series of clarion calls to Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services that young people need culturally relevant and realistic sex education to protect their health and save their lives," urged Debra Hauser, Executive Vice President at Advocates for Youth.

"The fact that this report comes on the heels of new data showing that 1 in 4 teen girls has had a sexually transmitted disease is further proof that the Administration's failed abstinence-only policy is putting young people in danger."

Earlier this year, the CDC also released data demonstrating that teen birth rates had increased for the first time in more than a decade.

"We will never be able to adequately address the sexual health needs of young people when our government insists upon funding abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that censor vital information about contraception and condoms and demonize homosexuality. All young people have the right to honest sexual health information," concluded Ms. Hauser.

Advocates for Youth is a national, nonprofit organization that creates programs and supports policies that help young people make safe, responsible decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.

Accomplish Healthy Weight With Low Calorie Diet And Physical Activity! Posted By : Neelima Reddy

Pharmacy Store

Over weight causes you many problems. So, you have to check frequently whether your weight balances your height. If the body mass index is less than 25 then it equates healthy weight. If your body mass index is in between 25 and 29.0, then you are called as overweight. If your body mass index is 30 and more than that, then you are called as obese.

Number of calories you should take for achieving healthy weight:

You have to take right number of calories every day according to your age, activity level and also depending on the state whether you want to lose or gain weight.

If you want lower amount of calories then you can consume the food that is packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients. Take fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat free or low fat milk or milk products.

Manage your weight by taking fruits and vegetables:

Eating fruits and vegetables is one of the healthy eating plans. You can take whole grains, lean meats, nuts and beans along with fruits and vegetables, which are safe and healthy. Eating fruits and vegetables will help in controlling weight of your body.

Taking diet with fruits and vegetables will reduce the risks of cancer and other chronic diseases. By eating fruits and vegetables, you can achieve the important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and other substances. These nutrients are very important to get good health, as fruits and vegetables are low in fat and calories.
Achieve healthy weight by physical activity:
You can maintain healthy weight by understanding the relation between energy intake (through the foods which you eat and sugar beverages) and energy you use (through the activities which you perform). If you want to lose weight then you have to use more energy than energy intake.

You can achieve healthy weight not only by eating but also by doing physical activity. Physical activity helps you to control the amount of calories. As you take food, the amount of calories increases, so if you do regular physical activity you can balance the amount of calories.

If you are an overweight person then first you concentrate on the methods in which you can prevent weight. One of the healthy weight methods from which you can reduce the amount of calories is decreasing the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages.
How to remain in the same healthy weight?
If you want to remain in the same weight rather than increasing or decreasing, then you have to burn calories each day. The burning of calories is possible by doing physical activity. The healthy weight helps in reducing the chance of developing heart disease, cancer and other chronic diseases.

The physical activities which help in burning your calories are walking, bending stretching, dancing, swimming and an important calorie burner is playing tennis.

If you are a heavy weight person, then for obtaining healthy weight, first you have to know what caused you heavy weight, and then only you can take action.

Maintain healthy weight so that you will be active in doing any type of activity.

Cholesterol-associated Gene Variants Can Predict Cardiovascular Events, Study Confirms

"The prospect of personalized medicine has received much hype, but until recently, there has been little hard evidence to support the promise," says Sekar Kathiresan, MD, MGH Director of Preventive Cardiology, the paper's lead author. "We feel that our data provides two insights. First, we provide a foundation for the possibility that a panel of gene variants will eventually be useful in preventive cardiac care. Second, we show that the combination of multiple variants related to cholesterol importantly contribute to the genetic risk for heart attack."

It is estimated that about half the variation in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels is inherited, rather than being caused by lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. While studies have associated several gene variants with cholesterol levels, exactly how those variants impact the risk of cardiovascular disease is unclear. The current study was designed to explore the influence of those variants on the risk of cardiovascular events -- heart attack, stroke or sudden cardiac death -- and whether measuring such variants could help predict risk better than simply measuring HDL and LDL levels.

Since the effects of individual gene variants appears slight, the research team looked at a combination of 9 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously associated with cholesterol levels. They analyzed data from 5,414 Swedish adults who participated in a major prospective epidemiological study and correlated data -- including standard measurements of HDL and LDL cholesterol and the presence of the 9 gene variants -- with information on the participants' subsequent medical histories available from a registry of information collected on all Swedish citizens. After the initial genotyping of participants not receiving lipid-lowering therapy, participants were assigned a genotype score ranging from 0 to 18, based on how many copies of the unfavorable SNPs they carried. Of the participants who had no cardiovascular events before enrolling in the study, 238 suffered a heart attack, stroke or cardiac death during the subsequent 10.6 years.

Higher genotype scores did reflect higher LDL ("bad") cholesterol and lower HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. Importantly, those with genotype scores of 11 or higher had a 63 percent greater risk of a cardiovascular event than did those with scores of 9 or lower. Although testing for the panel of 9 SNPs was not better than standard risk factors for predicting cardiac events in the overall population, among participants classified at intermediate risk by standard measures, adding the 9-SNP panel significantly improved the ability to distinguish truly elevated or reduced risk levels.

"A current clinical dilemma is how early to start patients on cholesterol-lowering medications like statins that can reduce the risk of heart attack. Our data suggest that those individuals classified as higher risk based on a genetic test may deserve more intense pharmacological and lifestyle treatments," says Kathiresan. "But before we can move from our pilot data to information that can impact the care of patients with or at risk for cardiovascular disease, we need to discover all the risk-related variants -- and there will probably be 50 to 100 -- and then conduct clinical studies confirming that this information can reliably guide patient care." Earlier this year Kathiresan, an instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and colleagues from the Broad Institute of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University began this gene-discovery process and identified six new cholesterol-associated gene variants in a separate study published in Nature Genetics.

Support for the NEJM study includes grants from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Fannie Rippel Foundation, the Donovan Family Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Study co-authors are David Altshuler, MD, PhD, and Christopher Newton-Cheh, MD, MPH, MGH; Olle Melander, MD, PhD, Dragi Anevski, PhD, Charlotta Roos, MSc, Goran Berglund, MD, PhD, Bo Hedblad, MD, PhD, Leif Groop, MD, PhD, and Marju Orho-Melander, PhD, Lund University, Sweden; Candace Guiducci and Noel Burtt, Broad Institute; and Joel Hirschhorn, MD, PhD, Children's Hospital Boston.

Compendium Serves As An Authoritative Reference On Safe Pharmacy Compounding

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

The U.S. Pharmacopeial (USP) Convention has announced the release of a new edition of the Pharmacists' Pharmacopeia, a comprehensive resource containing critical information for advancing the practice of safe and effective pharmacy and veterinary compounding.

Compiled under the guidance of leading pharmacy and veterinary experts, the Pharmacists' Pharmacopeia offers practicing compounding professionals vital information on safely preparing, compounding, packaging and storing medications. It combines relevant text from the United States Pharmacopeia and National Formulary (USP-NF) - the compendia that provide the official standards for quality, purity and strength for prescription and over-the-counter medications sold in the United States - with authorized content developed by USP's Council of Experts. The Council of Experts is the volunteer governing body that directs USP's scientific and standards-setting decisions.

"The Pharmacists' Pharmacopeia is not only an important resource that assists compounding professionals in doing their jobs more effectively, but it is a key component in assuring the safety of patients with individualized needs who use compounded products to treat their medical conditions," said Darrell Abernethy, M.D., Ph.D., chief science officer for USP. "The reference is an important part of USP's almost 200-year tradition of supporting the health professional's key role in promoting public health and safety."

This is the second edition of the Pharmacists' Pharmacopeia. The new version has been substantially updated and expanded from the first edition, released in 2005. It includes:

* the newly revised General Chapter Pharmaceutical Compounding - Sterile Preparations;

* 134 official monographs for compounded preparations and 73 USP General Chapters covering compounding, packaging, labeling and storage of pharmaceutical preparations;

* entirely new sections on veterinary compounding and food ingredients, flavorings and colorings; and

* enhanced and expanded sections on compounding support, dietary supplements, and legal requirements and laws applicable to compounding.

Weight Loss For Idiots - Why You Should Avoid "Fad" Diets Posted By : Kelly Lester

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

If youve watched any TV or done any web surfing lately, youve no doubt ran into countless ads for a new fad diet claiming it is the new magical cure to help you lose weight. Sure, you doubt their legitimacy, but youve tried everything else so you go for it, only to be let down once again. Here are some reasons to ditch these unreliable diets and stick with more tried and true methods.

Its easy to spot fad diets as they usually promise easy, immediate results. These diets usually sound too good to be true. They stress the importance of certain good foods while eliminating certain bad foods sometimes even an entire food group. Perhaps the easiest way to spot a fad diet is by the fact that they always seem to be trying to sell you something.

These fad diets also fail by not encouraging exercise. They promise quick results, with little contribution on your part besides sticking to the diet. Not only does this deter true weight loss, but in the long run it can be very unhealthy as lack of exercise leads to heart problems.

Often a fad diet relies on testimonials rather than scientific evidence. Some of the newer fad diets often base themselves on celebrity endorsement such as Oprah Winfrey and Anna Nicole Smith. Other times they will have numerous testimonials of people who have supposedly lost weight using the diet accompanied by dramatic before and after photos. Another gimmick is to include phrases such as lose 10 pounds in 10 days.

These fad diets also will often show some form of scientific study and an oversimplified explanation. These studies ignore the differences in metabolisms and bio-chemistry. Often the studies were not conducted using the scientific method and contain no legitimate claims. Fad diets usually ignore or refute any true scientific evidence that disagrees with the program.

Then why is it that these diets seem to work? It depends on which one you are currently trying but this can often be linked to things such as water loss. Even when these diets do show quick results, the important thing to keep in mind is that these results are not permanent as it is not healthy to stay on them too long, nor would you want to given their blandness and strict rules, not to mention that the weight is usually gained back.

The AHA, American Heart Association, urges dieters not to go on fad diets for many reasons. One of which is that these fad diets usually force you to eat a single type of food, which keeps you from having a balanced diet. When a person eats only one thing, they cant get the vitamins and nutrients that the food doesnt contain. These foods are also so bland that people just cant stick with them. A good diet is something you can eat and enjoy now and for the rest of your life.
